Choosing the right roller cover can significantly improve both your efficiency and the final result of your painting project. The key factor to consider when selecting a roller cover is the type of paint finish, also known as sheen.
Gloss or Semi-Gloss Paint
High-gloss paints tend to highlight imperfections, including lint left behind by the roller. For this reason, it’s best to use a shed-resistant woven roller cover when working with gloss or semi-gloss finishes. Woven covers are manufactured using tightly secured fibers, often with a “double-lock” construction, which helps deliver a smooth, clean, and nearly lint-free result.
Flat, Eggshell, or Satin Paint
For lower-sheen finishes such as flat, eggshell, or satin paints and stains, knit roller covers are commonly recommended. These covers have a more open, looped fiber structure, allowing them to absorb and release a larger amount of paint. This makes them efficient for coverage. However, if your goal is a more refined and professional-looking finish, a shed-resistant woven roller cover can also be used successfully with these types of paints.
Microfiber and foam roller covers are also widely available and offer excellent results, especially on smooth surfaces. Both options can produce a finish similar to spray application when used with paints, varnishes, or enamels. They are particularly suitable for cabinets, doors, and other sleek surfaces.
Once you’ve selected the appropriate roller cover material, the next step is to choose the correct nap length based on the texture of the surface you are painting.
There are roller covers designed for every type of paint finish, but each performs best under specific conditions. Selecting the right one will help you achieve better results with less effort.
